Centre of HOPE - ICoH Chennai
The AIE (Ambattur Industrial Estate)
spread over an area of 4.9 sq. kilometers is the largest
small-scale industrial estate in South Asia. Textile
industries like Ambattur Clothing Limited, Leela Scottish
and Bombay Fashions have their facilities here. The
Industrial Centre of HOPE-Chennai is located at Ambattur
town, 5 km away from the industrial estate.
Leela Scottish Lace ltd (7 unit’s strength of 3000
workers) at Ambattur and Regency International (1500
workers) were surveyed before the centre was established.
To determine the probable beneficiaries of this programme,
a community survey of the factory workers residing in the
area was also carried out.
Most of the workers at the Leela Scottish Lace Ltd have
studied up to the 10th standard and they work as helpers
and tailors. Following a meeting with the general manager
of the factory, we decided to run a tailoring course in
our vocational training centre as the factory needed more
tailors. The Industrial Centre of HOPE-Chennai will be a
boon to the factory workers resident in Ramapuram,
Venketapuram, Dobi colony and Teacher’s colony.
The following programs will be implemented through the
centre:
|
- Play school
(free English medium education for factory
workers’ children)
- Computer center
(Job oriented courses for factory workers’
children)
- Tailoring
center (Train tailors for Leela Scottish ltd)
- Spoken English
classes
-
